Special Traditional Meals With Javanese Salad
No matter how far we go, we still miss the food that makes us comfortable. Traditional dishes that live in the memory make us look for these foods.
When I went traveling to Batam City with my husband, I also missed the traditional food that I often enjoyed with my late mom.
It's quite painful. Losing my mother, also lost my pregnancy. But I choose to be strong. Traveling, and trying to get rid of all my feelings of loss on the trip.
With my husband, we stop by to new places. Also, tasting the foods in that person's city. All the food we tasted were random things. The point is that we really determine what we want to eat when we are really hungry. 😅 Looks like we're real spontaneous pro's.
So, that afternoon we were still on our way. It was past lunchtime, and we were starting to get hungry. I miss traditional food. I also did a search on Google Maps about the nearest place that provides traditional food.
NANGKRING is the most recommended place. With lots of good reviews from visitors. Finally, I headed to the cafe for a late lunch with my husband.
Javanese Food
NANGKRING CAFE in Batam City focuses on providing traditional Javanese food. As a Javanese, I was happy to find this place.
The food and drink menu is named after the Javanese regional language. Don't worry, the menus are still accompanied by a description of the ingredients in it.
I ordered some of the menu below:
- Special Sego Urap (read: rice with Javanese Salad in Special version)
- Ice Bandung Cincau (read: Iced Bandung Grassjelly)
- Tempe Mendoan (read: traditional fried Tempeh)
Sego Urap Spesial (read: rice with Javanese Salad in Special version)
Whoa! My plate looks full! The menu that I ordered contains various kinds of complete side dishes. This is a picture of filling and healthy side dishes.
Starting from Carbo, protein, also vegetables. Serve rice served with grated coconut salad.
Grated coconut salad consists of long beans, mung bean sprouts, and cassava leaves. The vegetables are boiled, which is then served with seasoned grated coconut. Very rich taste of spices.
For other complements, there are salted eggs, as well as spicy Tempeh cooked with anchovies.
There is also Tempe Mendoan (traditional fried Tempeh) which is served with the rice because I ordered the special version.
Sego Urap Spesial (rice with Javanese Salad in Special version) gives me beautiful nostalgia. All the flavors from the elements of the side dishes have a delicacy that blends beautifully. There are no negative comments for this side dish. I dare say that this is perfect for my taste buds especially perfect for my longing.
They have a great seasoned grated coconut salad (URAP). Savory, deliciously fragrant full of spices. I carry a beautiful taste in my memory.
Because I was with my husband, I also ordered Tempe Mendoan (traditional fried Tempeh). One portion contains 4 pieces of fried tempeh.
Tempe Mendoan is unique. In the past, my late mom used to make it as a snack in the afternoon. The middle part of the Tempeh is half cooked but the outside is crispy. With pieces of spring onion which also enriches the taste.
How about the drink? Ice Bandung Cincau (Iced Bandung Grassjelly) tastes refreshing. Filled with grass jelly (cincau) which is chewy like jelly but this one is a healthier version.
The sweetness of this ice is balanced. Not excessive. So, I'm happy with the dishes here.
Total $3.5 for my 3 type of order, that's quite cheap in Batam City.
$3.5 for rice, drink, and snacks, it's worth having at NANGKRING CAFE. With a simple cafe design, there are many designs that will remind us of traditional Javanese things.
Like a Wayang art attached to the cafe wall. Also, the use of rattan for lights.
In addition, for spoons and forks, they use a rattan material holder. Interesting.
I was satisfied with our random cafe choice that afternoon. Wherever we go, the most important thing is that we can feel the many longings that we carry in our memories. See you, FOODIES!

Sometimes, its very hard to think about what to eat let alone deciding so fast about what to eat. you guys are really pros truly because thinking of that alone gives me some sort of headache. Also, traditional food are nothing to be compared to the international ones because they are very two different entity. Sure you had fun with your hubby?
