The name AMUMA
While growing up as a child I used to think names where just what parents would call their children in order to differentiate them from each other but as I grew older I got to know that our names had much deeper meanings attached to them. Most times it is the circumstances surrounding the birth of the child or events that occurred during the period the child was conceived and birthed.
An instance here is my dad, His name is Osondu and it means race of life and he was birthed during the way while everyone for running to their life and looking for a means to survive.
My name is Vivian which means Alive or lively and sincerely there is never a dull moment around me. I would always make you laugh and make sure no one is moody around me. For my native name CHINASA it means God answers and of course HE DOES !.
The reason behind the name as I was told by my parents was that while my mom was in labour to give birth to me, it took almost a whole day. She was in labour from the mid night till the next day. With the pain and strong contractions there was no sign of me coming forth anytime soon. My dad who had left for work after taking her to the hospital came back and still met her in pain. He was confused as of what to do but could only think of one thing; he walked right into the ward where my mom laid crying and put his hand on her tummy and prayed.
According to her, she immediately felt the urge to push and the nurses, doctor and midwife rushed in to perform their duties, there and then came forth a cute little me and with the blood stains and all I was handed over to my dad and he called me Chinasa. Shockingly, he kept that shirt till date to always remind me how I stained him and how I owe him a new shirt (yeah we still make jokes about that day).
Now talking about the name AMUMA. Honestly AMUMA was not a name listed by my parents to give to any of their children, but while I was growing my dad made an observation about the way I react to things speedily and yet quietly.
I designed this image myself.
One faithful day, we were taking a walk in the evening just father and daughter, when mistakenly my dad was quacked by another man who was in a hurry and though the road was narrow the man chose not to slow down and just as they bumped into themselves my dad apologized cos he was trying to make a space for me also, the stranger started raining abusive words on him instead of also acknowledging his fault.
Unhappy me couldn't watch someone talk to my dad in such a manner so I turned to the stranger and asked him to say sorry to my dad or else I would beat him (of course I couldn't beat a grown up) but I had to do something. The stranger laughed and then I ran and picked up a stick bigger than me to hit him. Just then my dad stopped me, the stranger seeing my reaction though I was little was amazed and then said sorry to my dad if it would stop me from hitting him. Funny after that day they became friends and then we relocated.
Like I stated in my introduction the name AMUMA means lightening and just as lightening does act same applies to me but not to ruin. I may lack words but my actions speak louder. He felt AMUMA fitted the way I act and Chinasa fitted everything surrounding my birth. I love and cherish both names so I decided to bear both. And, if you ask me today what my name is I will proudly and boldly tell you that my name is Vivian Chinasa Amuma Angus. Yes, that's Me !
