When it takes the Control

avatar
(Edited)

Fear is one of the basic emotions human beings are born with. It is innate and quite crucial for our survival.

It helps us take the steps to get rid of the life-threatening situations. It makes us protective and facilitates building a sound environment. In other words, the security we try to acquire owes to our fears.

Nevertheless, fear is productive as far as it remains in our control. As soon as it gets control over us, we are doomed.

Have you ever experienced a situation where things were going well until thought of fear stroke your mind and everything changed?

================

My academics was something I was always very serious about. All my dreams were related to excelling in education. I have an excellent academic record. Throughout my school life, I remained in the top 6 ranks. I have done my graduation with an A+ grade. I am telling you this all to illustrate how negatively fear can influence our mental and physical abilities.

Here, I would like to share a personal experience that happened to me when I was in class 10. I was giving a regular class test. I couldn’t study sufficiently for the test, but I still could attempt 90% of the answer correctly.

After writing the first few lines, all of a sudden, I forgot the next sentences in the answer. When I couldn’t remind them in a few seconds, a stream of horrible thoughts struck my mind.

“If I can’t remember the answer anymore, I will fail the test. I have never failed in any subject. I haven’t ever obtained less than 70% on any test. Oh! It is the beginning of this year. Will all the subjects seem difficult for me? How can I study any further? Will I get lower grades in the final exams as well? Will I be able to meet the requirements? …….”

The wind swirled around me, and the world went black. I felt like my brain was not working anymore. Anxiety reached its hype.

It was like the memory of a computer being bugged by some virus. I couldn’t write a single word after that. The reason was nothing but the fear. Fear of failure. Fear of losing reputation. Fear of falling down. Fear of being insulted. You name it.

I started shivering. My heart was palpitating. I felt nausea that finally resulted in vomiting. That’s the way my body reacts to extreme stress - nausea followed by vomiting.

The fear did not come out of any danger in front; but it was a product of merely some thoughts. The thoughts are the things that design the world around us. Sometimes, I think we are the slaves of our thoughts. The thoughts become our worst master when they are dominated by the emotions of fear and anxiety.

“Anxiety is nothing but repeatedly re-experiencing failure in advance. What a waste.” – Seth Godin

The test in which I could easily get more than 75% marks with the level of preparation I had, I was only able to score 5%.

================

All of us face big or small obstacles in every sphere of life. The obstacles are not real always; sometimes, they are merely an illusion. Fear can be defined as an anticipation of the negative effects produced by real or illusionary obstacles.

We can deal with obstacles if we are not overwhelmed by fear of failure. Sometimes, we go so far in anticipating the negative effects that obstruct our ability to think about things objectively.

It leads us to feel our resources are not enough to deal with the obstacle. The hindrance might be the size of small grain, but fear converts it into a mountain.

If we want to progress in life, we need to learn how to overcome our fears. We can do it by changing our thoughts. The most important thing in dealing with fear is to face it. Instead of giving in and / or hiding from the anticipated storm, stand up and face it. Once you take your first step, you will overcome the obstacle, be it imagined or real.

As Dale Carnegie said

“Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.”

Fear can break someone mentally.
75% to 5% the distance was so much.

I remembered when I was in highschool and I was called out to recite the national anthem. Something we sing everyday, at that moment I didn't even know what national anthem meant. Was it a school? Was it the name of the president? It took time before I could start and I even said the wrong thing. After I was directed back to my line, I started reciting it.

Oh! That happens and how embarrassing it is to forget so common a thing like national anthem.

Well, let's not go too far. I really felt the same way too. Like, even when the day started well but later on turned out not good due to uncertainties, worries, and negative thoughts that came across my mind throughout the day..

These negative thoughts simply destroy our performance, don't they?

Yeah, I've let fear control me a number of times, and my fear caused me to make the mistakes I was trying to avoid. You're right about it being a constant struggle. But I'm learning to have a different mindset.🌺

Examination fear has never been my thing. I am one of those students who would write out everything I know and even the ones I don't know. It's always better to try and fail rather than fail without trying.

I guess after that test, you never allowed fear to gain control over you.

Wel well. A detailed write up this is. Fear is paralyzing and what breeds fear is inaction. I was just pondering on this today and I decided to write about it in regards to my thoughts. I loved this.

Those eyes jaja Amber!

Well exams, having a degree in Chemical Engineering and a Masters in Knowledge Management I have sat my share of exams.

I must admit, I never got stressed out by any of them. I learnt early on from my grandfather that as long as you do your best it does not matter if you fail.

Great entry Amber!

. I learnt early on from my grandfather that as long as you do your best it does not matter if you fail.

It is a great wisdom.
You know the biggest problem is to make your heart accept this wisdom.

Wow! Fear can be so debilitating, right? We let it take hold and then convince ourselves of the outcome before we even get there. Our body is completely incapacitated...from heart rate to blood pressure to feeling flushed, sweaty and light headed and at times nauseous. I know how you must have felt because I have been there... It was for an English Literature exam at University. That particular semester the books were FAT... think Middlemarch at 220,000 words and these were not light easy summer reads either. And we had about 8 books to read for the course... and that was just English hahaha. I read them all except Middlemarch - (note to self to read it one day!). Day of the exam... I'm chatting casually to someone outside before we go in. Turns out he hadn't read a book I had and vice versa. For 10 minutes we swapped notes on the books. Middlemarch came up as the compulsory question. I figured - ok I've failed my first exam ever. I've always done very well in English and here I was about to fail...English... yikes! I actually contemplated walking out of the exam. I was shaking and cursing under my breath. H
My heart was pounding. But then somehow I pulled myself together and decided to write the exam. Perhaps it was the fear of having to read all those books again and the fact that I knew I could pull together maybe a page for Middlemarch that caused me to throw caution to the wind and go for it. I had also memorised some of the quotes in those short 10 minutes...bit of a photographic memory for text when I am studying... so I devoted most of my exam time to the questions I knew and spent the last 20 minutes furiously writing anything relevant to the question that I could remember from my classmates notes. Talk about panic ROFLLLLLLLLLLLLLL. I got 51% and passed the semester. I never ever left a book out again !LOLZ !LUV

I pretty much understand your situation...... I see that in your situation, the fear of reading everything agsin gave you the strength too. !LOLZ

Fear is disasterous at times. It just forms an alternate reality for us. And we cannot see anything outside it
