The day and the night are equally unsafe

I am a resident of the city that was once considered the “city of lights". People felt safe walking on the street any time of the day even at late night.

Gatherings were held outside houses and people had no fear of being robbed or murdered.

Then there came a time when target killing and homicide became the talk of the town. Street crimes, kidnapping and robbing in the houses was like the child play.

There was a little decline in homicide over the course of the time. However, overall crime didn’t vanish.

In the contemporary era, Karachi is the city of light only on papers. No area of the city is safe. Street crimes are at its peak.

According to the report of the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC)

during the first four months of 2023 alone, nearly 19,000 motorcycles were snatched or stolen, with only 1,069 recovered............ 9,464 citizens were deprived of their cell phones during the first four months of 2023, out of which only 161 were recovered. In addition, 754 vehicles were snatched and only 211 were recovered.......... As many as 186 people lost their lives while resisting robbery bids and other incidents, while several others sustained wounds.

These are merely the number of cases that are reported one way or the other. The number of original incidences are much higher. Credit goes to the corrupt government and bad governance.

I, my family and people in my surroundings have themselves encountered and witnessed instances of crime.

Once, I returned home taking my son back from school. I was standing just in front of the gate, waiting for the gate to open.

I was holding my clutch in my hand. Only a few seconds had passed standing there while I felt like the clutch was being pulled out of my hand.

The first thought came to my mind that my son was pulling it. As I turned my head to deal with what was happening, the clutch was no more in my hand.

I saw a teenager running towards the bike and the two guys ran away.

Thankfully, I had spent the greater portion of the money in buying the course of the school. Had the incident happen while going to the school. The loss would be bigger.

Once my brother-in-law bought a brand new bike. Only after three days of the purchase the bike was picked right in front of the gate of our house.

Once my husband and his brother were robbed at gun point when they were coming back from work.

Once my clutch was picked out of my hand bag in the market. I don’t know when and how it happened. I only got to know when I put my hand in the bag to take the clutch out for making the payment.

Once I went to a general store and made payment there. The shopkeeper seeing a gold ring in my finger asked if I was new in the area. I replied that I live just a few steps away.

He replied, “Are you not aware of the insecurity of this vicinity! You shouldn’t be wearing precious metal outside your home if you want your life and assets to be safe.”

His fear and advice made perfect sense to me. He was the one who was robbed thrice while doing business in his shop.

Lately, my sister-in-law witnessed a robbery at a local bakery.

These are a few instances of crime in my area. The whole city is facing these crimes everyday.

There is no specific time for the crimes to happen. The day time is as unsafe as the night.

It feels like the criminals are keeping an eye for the opportunity. The avail as soon as they find one.

It is because of this reason that I don’t go out for a morning walk. I fear of being kidnapped.

I wish my city and area to become safe again so that people may be out of their homes without fear. Nevertheless, honestly speaking, it doesn’t seem to happen, at least in the near future.

May God save us all......

its like part of our life in Karachi, people have accepted this fact. They cannot just stop living their fun life as you can see the crowd on weekends and on special occasions, they are all out, trying to enjoy and have some peaceful time with family but back of their minds, they know anything can happen anytime as its all over Karachi now.

Life doesn't stop. It makes its way. We go and do everything we want but as you said we never know if we would go back safe or not. It's heart-breaking

They have destroyed karachi and now they are destroying other cities as well. I become very sad when I think about all these things happening in my country. Sadly I can't do anything about it but just to ALLAH.

Karachi, the city giving 70% revenue to the country, deserves to be maintained and built the best way but wahala! They just care about their own treasures.

Hmm.. it so sad, this crimes are always increasing daily. Same thing is happening here , just that in my place, there is liberty during the day, you can wear you gold and whatever you want to wear and walk freely during the day, though not everywhere.

My friend's phone was picked from his pocket when he went to buy some materials in the market, he didn't realize it until he got home. Down here people use voodoo to steal from others, you can be scammed and you will never notice it until you get home. A lot of people were scammed that way.

Today, people don't exchange greetings on queue at the ATM machine because of such things. They said once those carrying such powers talk to you and you respond, they will ask you to withdraw everything in your account and hand it over to them and you will obey them unconsciously. You will remain like that till you get home before you regain consciousness.

Sorry about all your experiences, perfect security only lies in God's hands, if he doesn't watch over us, we are doomed. However we must also keep playing our part by being watchful and avoid anything that draws attention. Like you said, this criminals are everywhere monitoring us waiting for the right opportunity. We just have to be watchful

Aaaah! The voodoo thing happened to my cousin. He gave his mobile and wallet to the ladies.

We have the liberty of wearing precious metals too, but the thing is that you never know when the unwanted would happen. So, prevention is better than cure.

Even though I live in a first world country inflation and the high cost of living is making those in the lower incomes more desperate. A steady rise in crime statistics in my city is unmistakable. It will get worse I'm afraid. At least I could defend myself and my home when it comes down to it.

Economic crises and rapid inflation in the current time has been back breaking. It has become difficult for people to make the both ends meet.

However, so far as my city is concerned, bad governance and corruption are the leading cause of the crime. Unfortunately, the ones who are supposed to control the crime are involved in the crime.

That's really true that once krachi also known as the city of light's, situations same here too as people do robbery, snatching in day time. It's not safe anymore to live here but we've to live here. Even i can't say things will be good with time because thing's become more worst with time 😶

Yes, correct. All of the scariest places you might've heard of; Inglewood, Watts, South Central—drive - by's, helicopters, et cetera. Been all through it, where I grew up, partied in all of them at all times of the night.

What you describe, however, I'd stay inside. And get more locks.

Since we've been back, as people ask things like what it's like to be back, as much fun as it was out there, I say something like I'd rather be culturally understood.

That's all. Tough to explain to someone who only knows one culture. Like explaining what a Corvette feels like to someone who's never seen a car. Not agreed with or liked or heard or any similar verb, "understood." Does that make sense?

Things like fellas not holding doors for ladies gets to me after awhile. I understand and appreciate cultural differences, hence I appreciate being culturally understood.

Here, I can grab the door for her, call him an asshole, close the door on him and everyone understands. Anywhere else, no way, sound the asshole American alarm.

From where have you been back?

Cultural differences is certainly a great phenomenon. Something norm in one culture may be a prohibited act in another one. It may happen that you derive someone offensive while you did just a normal innocent act.

Not only within societies, there are drastic cultural differences between different neighbourhoods. There are places where people use the language we regard as disrespectful but that's their normal way of talking and at times, the display of love.

You have got quite rich experiences with regard to cultural differences.

You might have observed how the word "LOVE" is treated in different regions. Many languages have various alternatives for the word.

Oooooops! I feel soooo embarrassed.
In English there is a phrase "making love". It has sexual connotation.
Not know the exact meaning, I used it innocently in non-sexual context. (I am not to blame. I just thought in my own language 🙃)
