A BOLD STEP

It was another day to go to work, but I wasn't feeling up for it. Sluggishly, I got up from bed and made my way to the bathroom to prepare myself for another day of working tirelessly. A little over an hour later, I was all dressed and ready for work. Grabbing my handbag and my keys, I locked the door and hit the road.

Thirty minutes later, there I was at work, sitting purposelessly at my desk. I worked as a sales assistant for a mini supermarket, but secretly I despised the job. Don't get me wrong, the supermarket was a great business. In a day, we could have endless sales from people, trooping in and out continuously. Customers upon customers patronized us to no end. Not to mention the pay. It was so good. My employer never failed to pay me well and on time. Didn't have a problem with the supermarket. Everything was perfect. I earned enough to take care of myself.

The fact that my parents were friends with my employer made things a lot easier. I would dare say she was over kind to me. However, something was amiss. Above all, the comfort and luxury I thought I felt at that time. I wanted more, I felt something was missing. I felt like I was stuck in one place. Like I wasn't moving. I wanted more. I was working but I felt useless. I was tired of doing the same thing again and again and again.

Every day while coming to work, there was this fashion school along the road that captivated me. I was always intrigued by the kind of dresses and attire they had on their mannequin. Gradually, they won my heart over, and I found myself growing interested in it more and more every day. I began to develop a passion for it. I wanted to be a designer.

One weekend, I sat home, in the living room, deliberating on what I was about to do. "I've wasted enough time in my life doing nothing", I thought to myself. I know it was crazy, leaving the comfort, a good paying job and all the perks that came with it. But I was driven by passion, I had made up my mind. I wanted to learn fashion designing. After contemplating it for over thirty minutes, I was just lost in my thoughts. I was sure I wanted to embark on this journey. It wasn't going to be easy, I knew it, but it was worth the risk.

"Dear, you seem away with the fairies, is everything alright?" My dad asked, appearing out of the blue.

I shifted a bit, startled by his sudden appearance.

"How did you get in? I didn't see you come in" I asked, surprised.

He chuckled a bit.

"Darling, I came through the same door you've been staring at for over thirty minutes now."

" And I've been in this room seeing you lost in your thoughts. What's wrong?" He asked with concern brimming his features .

I took a deep breath," Dad can I speak with you?" I started off.

" Okay " he answered, taking a seat beside me.

" Well, I've been thinking, and I want to go into fashion designing," I said.

As I went on and on explaining to him my interest and passion in it. I told him why I wanted to do it and how I loved fashion and Design.I also told him my plans on quitting my job to learn fashion. And I thought all I was saying was going into reasonable ears. However, I was stunned by my father's sharp objection immediately he heard I was intending on quitting my job. He was opposed to all my desires and aspirations, they all were.

"Young lady, you're not quitting your job, end of discussion". My dad said sternly.

"This is just an obsession, it will soon pass." He said, walking away.

But my resolve was strong. The following day, I submitted my resignation letter. My employer was disappointed by my resignation. But she understood my reason better than my parents did.

When my parents discovered I had quit my job, they were furious, they threatened and did all manner of things to me, but I didn't budge in my decision. I felt like a castaway but I held strong.

Using all my savings, I enrolled in a fashion school and I began my journey. It wasn't easy. Having no money to fend for myself. With time, my employer, who was a close family friend as I said earlier, offered to take me in, as her house was close to my fashion school. I quickly jumped at the opportunity, knowing that it would save me the cost of transportation.

It's been more than a year now since I started my fashion journey, and today I can proudly say that I'm a full-pledged fashion designer. Sometimes, even my parents patronize my services and I make nice clothes for them. What a world!

What a very inspiring story. Probably sometimes what we need is a bold step to be taken
