Parliament House in Bern
Did you know that between 1798 and 1803, the short-lived Helvetic Republic had three capitals: first Aarau, then Lucerne and finally Bern. The first was built the today's Federal Palace West between 1852-1857, followed by the Federal Palace East between 1888-1892, and finally the actual parliament building was completed until 1894-1902.
This palace is the heart of Swiss democracy. Parliament meets under the large dome, and the west as well as east wings house parts of the federal government and the administration. The large Parliament Square and the long terrace are popular and lively meeting places. The Parliament is a protected symmetrical building complex with a length of just over 300 meters. It is considered one of the most important historicist archtectural buildings in the country.
