Over the Rhine river in Basel
In the background, the Roche Towers by architects Herzog & de Meuron the most modern landmarks in Basel, the highest buildings in Switzerland that can be used as living space are visible far beyond the city borders. Roche is one of the world's greatest biotechnology enterprises.
Both towers house are the offices of the Roche pharmaceutical group. The first building finished in 2015 and with a height of 178 m. was the highest building in Switzerland until it was topped by the second tower with a height of 205 meters in 2022.
The Basel Cathedral was built between 1019 and 1500 in the Romanesque and Gothic styles, with his red stone look can be seen even from far away
The middle bridge in Basel initially served more for the local traffic, was however in the 14th century, over the Gotthard Pass become an international significance. For more than 650 years, the middle bridge was the only bridge that connected the Big Basel with the Small Basel. The growth of the city population and the resulting traffic increase necessitated the construction in the 19th century for a second bridge over the Rhine river.
