One of the oldest wooden settlements

Today an excursion in the canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland, close to the border with Lichtenstein and Austria. The small town consists of about 40 houses with around more as 60 habitants and is surrounded by a medieval town wall. The wooden settlement belongs to the political municipality of Grabs. The path along the lakeshore is breathtaking, after a short walk of about 20 minutes you are up in the small town. Werdenberg is the oldest Swiss wooden settlement with an almost town-like character and is the smallest town in Switzerland with a lot of history and well-preserved medieval buildings. Its good condition is thanks to the fact that Werdenberg has never been ravaged by war or fire.

I have already posted about Werdenberg Castle, which is situated on a hill with a wonderful view of the surrounding area and dates back to the 13th century. The small town of Werdenberg, which was first mentioned about 1289, has been inhabited continually over the last 800 years. Its history is closely connected with the construction of its castle named also Werdenberg.

It is one of the last remaining medieval wooden urban settlements in Europe and is listed in the inventory list for sites of national importance worthy of protection. There are also two museums which provide an insight into the history of the castle's development and show how people lived in the small town.

The whole path with flower, history, gates and wooden houses make the walk very pleasant and bring us back to the past days here.

The Werdenberg lake at an altitude of 447 meters above sea level at the foot of the castle is a popular local relaxation area.
