INSPIRING OTHERS IN MY LITTLE WAY

In my last post on role models, I talked about my role model, someone I look up to and draw inspiration from. I talked about Martin Luther King Jnr as my role model and the features I admire in him.

However, even as I look up to another as my role model, I believe that my life also inspires another person at my level. I may not have much, but I always feel happy that the little I things do inspire other people.

A few months ago I discussed with a young man who so much desired to study Medicine and Surgery at the University, however, he was offered admission to study Human Anatomy. He is currently in his 300l in Human Anatomy but deep down within him, he still feels this desire to pursue his dream to study Medicine and Surgery.

He met a friend to whom he disclosed his plan to purchase another Jamb form (University entrance exam) to try again if he will get his desired course. The friend discouraged him that since he is already in his 300l in another course, there won't be any need still going to write another Jamb for a new course.

He was discouraged and decided to bury the idea. He later met me and we started a conversation, along the line, he told me how he wanted to rewrite Jamb for Medicine and his friend discouraged him. Knowing what he was passing through, I sat him down to encourage him and used myself as an example.

Years ago when I wanted to study Medicine and Surgery, I was initially offered admission into Biochemistry, however, I never gave up. I tried again, till in my final year in Biochemistry, I eventually got admission to study Medicine and Surgery and I was so happy that I finally achieved your dreams.

He found a lot of motivation in my story and was greatly inspired. He later summoned the courage to try again. He has written his Jamb and his result was very good. He is awaiting his Post UTME exam and I am confident that he will get his desired course this time.

So, in any little thing we do, we can be an inspiration and role model to someone close to us.

In my little way, some of the features I feel that people may look up to me for as their role model are:

RESILIENCE
This is one of my greatest strengths because I don't give up on anything I do. I have done some things that didn't work out once or twice but I kept on trying and eventually I got them. And the joy when I finally get it far outweighs what I passed through.

SERVICE TO OTHERS
One thing I so much love to do is to serve those around me irrespective of class or status. It is something that I find flowing freely and I have so much joy and satisfaction doing it. I have far more joy in serving others than being served. People around me find this attribute worthy of emulation and I am glad that it inspires them.

LEADERSHIP
Another thing people look up to me a lot is my leadership abilities and potential. I have held different leadership positions right from my secondary school days till the University where I held many positions in the Students' Union. People always tend to follow my pattern and many come to ask for my guidance and advice.

Some often express the inspiration and motivation they get from me and there are many of them I can humbly say that they are my followers.

RESPONSIBILITY
I also try to be as responsible as possible in my appearance, speech, and composure. I also hold on to my faith and fear of God and people around me look up to that.

I would not want to blow my own trumpet but the point here is that in whatever we do in this life, let us be mindful that someone out there is looking up to us in our little way. We don't have to be the President of America to be role models to others.

Let us, therefore, build ourselves and our composure, so that we will be able to be good role models to others out there at all times.
