From Digital to Analog: My First Acrylic Portrait (Step-by-step) Eng-Sp

For some time I've been feeling the need to draw and paint using traditional mediums. My process has gone from using very simple mediums due to lacking resources to buy expensive paints and papers to using digital mediums because they are so practical. For me, digital mediums are my great gateway to art, it was how I could show I could make art, how I developed my abilities and learned a lot more. After illustrations for books came digital paintings, and my most recent experiment with animation.

Hace algún tiempo que estoy teniendo esta necesidad de dibujar y pintar con medios tradicionales. Mi proceso ha pasado de utilizar medios muy simples por carecer de recursos para adquirir pinturas y papeles costosos a utilizar medios digitales por lo prácticos que estos resultan. Para mí los medios digitales son mi gran puerta al arte, fue la manera como pude demostrar que podía hacer arte, como pude desarrollar mis habilidades y aprender mucho mas. Luego de las ilustraciones para libros vinieron las pinturas digitales, y mi mas reciente experimento con animación.

However, art for me is more than work, it's something I do because I have to. I need to make art just like I need to speak and walk, like I need to breathe. And if at any moment a particular style starts feeling like work, then I experiment with something else.
On Sundays I like to do something that doesn't feel like work, something that won't be for sale, whether because I'm doing it to learn or because I just want to do it for myself.

Sin embargo, el arte es para mí más que trabajo, es algo que hago porque tengo que. Yo necesito hacer arte así como necesito hablar y caminar, como necesito respirar. Y si en algún momento algún estilo particular empieza a sentirse como trabajo, entonces yo experimento con algo más. Los domingos me gusta hacer algo que no se sienta como trabajo, algo que no estará a la venta, bien sea porque lo estoy haciendo por aprender, o porque solo quiero hacerlo para mí.

This weekend I decided to do something I had never done in my life: paint with acrylics. In the past, the little I had painted with traditional mediums had been with oils, I love this medium because I like to work with detail and it gives me time to refine and add tones to my liking. Acrylic paint, on the other hand, has the quality of drying very quickly. This, of course, is not entirely a disadvantage, but for my first time with the medium it was quite a challenge.

Este fin de semana decidí hacer algo que nunca en mi vida había hecho: pintar con acrílicos. En el pasado, lo poco que había pintado con medios tradicionales había sido con óleos, me encanta este medio porque me gusta trabajar con detalle y me da el tiempo para perfeccionar y agregar tonalidades a mi gusto. La pintura acrílica, en cambio, tiene la cualidad de secar muy rápido. Esto, desde luego, no es del todo una desventaja, pero para ser mi primera vez con el medio fue todo un reto.

This is not my best piece and that's why I want to share it with you.

Esta no es mi mejor pieza y es por eso que quiero compartirla con ustedes.

First I drew a grid on 300 g cotton paper. I don't have canvas to prime and the truth is that painting on framed canvases is the least practical for those of us who are learning: they take up too much space, and they are also just practices.Many people accuse this grid of being the method for beginners, and it seems right to me, there's nothing wrong with using beginner methods.
Then I placed an orange layer a little watery on the background. I don't have gesso but that wasn't going to stop me.

Primero dibujé una cuadrícula en papel de algodón de 300 g. No tengo lienzo para imprimar y la verdad es que pintar en lienzos enmarcados es lo menos práctico para aquellos que estamos aprendiendo: ocupan demasiado espacio, y además son solo prácticas. Muchas personas acusan a esta cuadrícula de ser el método para los principiantes, y a mí me parece que está bien, no está nada mal en usar métodos de principiantes.

There I began to paint the darkest tones. When I paint dark skins with oil it is very fun to mix colors. I have always found it fascinating all the mixes you have to make to obtain certain tones of dark skins. However, this time I have tried to go for the almost monochrome due to being acrylics, which dry faster. I know I will not have the time to mix tones as I like so I have limited my palette to the following tones:

Luego coloqué en el fondo una capa de naranja un poco aguada. No tengo gesso pero eso no me iba a detener.
Allí empecé a pintar los tonos más oscuros. Cuando pinto pieles oscuras al óleo se hace muy divertido mezclar los colores. Siempre me ha parecido fascinante todas las mezclas que debes hacer para obtener ciertos tonos de pieles oscuras. Sin embargo esta vez he intentado ir a lo casi monocromático por tratarse de acrílicos, que secan más rápido. Sé que no tendré el tiempo de mezclar tonalidades como me gusta así que he limitado mi paleta a los siguientes tonos:

Although I knew I had to paint in blocks, I forgot to represent the midtones in my sketch. So I was going at it when I realized I was ruining it. First lesson learned: draw the map of midtones too when you're going to paint with acrylics to ensure block work.

Aunque sé que debo pintar por bloques, olvidé representar en mi boceto los medios tonos. Primera lección aprendida: dibuja también el mapa de medios tonos cuando vayas a pintar con acrílicos para así garantizar el trabajo en bloques.

I was supposed to paint the darkest tones first, then the midtones and then the lightest, that way I can ensure I'm using the colors from my palette neatly throughout the painting. But that's not my natural workflow, not always. Here goes my progress, definitely better than before.

Se suponía que pintaría primero los tonos oscuros, luego los medios tonos y luego los más claros, así puedo garantizar que estoy usando los colores de mi paleta de forma prolija en toda la pintura. Pero ese no es mi flujo natural de trabajo, no siempre. Acá va mi progreso, definitivamente mejor que lo anterior.

When I had finished the first layer, I felt somewhat proud that it was something that can be understood at first sight. My favorite part: mixing black with hydrangea blue and orange to achieve those subtle tones that are different in the most illuminated parts of the face like the lips, eyelids, nose and ears.
Finally I applied a second paint layer and painted the rest of the orange background with ochre.

Ya cuando hube terminado la primera capa, me sentía medianamente orgullosa de que fuera algo que se comprende a la vista. Mi parte favorita: mezclar el negro con azul hortensia y con naranja para lograr esos tonos sutiles que son diferentes en las partes más iluminadas del rostro como los labios, párpados, nariz y orejas.
Finalmente apliqué una segunda capa se pintura y pinté el resto del fondo naranja con amarillo ocre.

Yes, it's a Sunday practice. It's not my best piece, it's not within the context of a collection, it's not a medium I'm used to. I don't want to stop, we always need to do something because we love it, because we like to learn. This makes me feel more like an artist, more alive, more like a child.

Sí, es una práctica dominguera. No es mi mejor pieza, no está dentro de un contexto de una colección, no es un medio al que esté acostumbrada. No quiero parar, siempre nos hace falta hacer algo porque lo amamos, porque nos gusta aprender. Esto me hace sentir más artista, más viva, más niña.
