Over the River - Peso da Régua City | Portugal
Hello everybody :)
Today we are going to the north of Portugal to discover a small part of the Douro Wine Region. After Alentejo, this is one of the most beautiful areas in my country (at least in my opinion).
These landscapes cut along the mountains are considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site, studded with vineyards in small rows as far as the eye can see, going downhill to the Douro river that winds through the entire mountainous area of the north of the country, originating in Spanish lands.
All the vineyards are identified with the name of the farms or the varieties of the wines that are produced there, as this is the oldest wine region in the world, having been created in 1756 by the Marquês de Pombal.
The stop this time was in the northern city of Peso da Régua, capital of our much appreciated Port Wine.
This is one of the most consumed wines by the Portuguese and with established and due recognition throughout the world. In the month of September, this part of the country receives several tourists who purposely go there for the harvest, to participate not only in the grape harvest but also in the entire process necessary for wine production. I can already assure you that it is not easy and anyone who thinks they are just coming to experience something cultural should be disappointed.
The dynamics and economy of the city are mainly directed towards this aspect, so we can find the wine tourism farms along the river and the piers for boat trips where you can enjoy the beautiful landscape and do tastings.
If you visit Peso da Régua, don't forget to take the section to Pinhão on the National 222. These 27 km of road (and from curve to curve) earned the award for the most beautiful road in the world, as i usually like to joke, it's a D'Ouro road :)
But there is much more to see than the vineyards and the boats arriving or crossing the dam (something that captures the attention of many onlookers), and this is visible in the small crowds that usually gather next to the dam to watch the boats being "raised" inside small gates that are flooded until they reach the water level above and in this way can continue their journey along the river.
Arriving at Peso da Régua, the first stop was the old Pedestrian Bridge, which was once a railway bridge, today converted so that everyone can cross over the Douro River and take pictures to remember later. As we passed by, we were approached by the saleswomen sitting in front of their small improvised stalls, full of traditional sweets, but what stands out the most is the well-known Régua candy, handmade and wrapped in its little white paper as if it were a bow, "they melt in your mouth and warm your heart" this is the key phrase they usually use to advertise the product :)
From the top of the bridge we can see the cruise ships docking at the port and some following their journey upriver.
Then we chose to go down to the riverside area to enjoy the fauna, flora and take a very pleasant walk along the river towards a park that exists nearby.
It was in that same park that i decided to launch the Drone and make some more records in order to obtain new perspectives and recognition of the surrounding area.
It turned out to be a somewhat troubled launch because in an oversight at the end of the flight, i ended up crashing the Drone into a tree and for a matter of a few centimeters it did not fall into the water.
I also realized that filming and then taking the photos through printscreens won't be the best technique since the images lose a lot of quality, so next time i'll choose to take some photos from up there :)
Despite having mentioned some characteristics of the Douro Vinheteiro, this article was more directed towards the city in question, so i have reserved some more enlightening records that i will use in another article.
That's all for today, as usual, i hope you enjoyed this sharing of another corner of this country.

Indeed :)
Have you personally been able to participate in the grape harvest or witness the wine production process? It must be an incredible opportunity to delve into the rich traditions and craftsmanship behind this renowned wine.
Yes ;) i had the opportunity to follow the whole process, especially when i was younger and my grandparents were still alive and every year they gathered the whole family for the harvest.
Still remember the taste of the sweet wine we drank when we were kids, actually it wasn't considered wine yet as it hadn't fermented and didn't have any alcohol content, it was just grape juice :) good times, good nostalgia :) Btw, thank you for stopping by
