Capela de Santa Bárbara - Favaios | Portugal
Hi everybody :)
To end our visit to the village of Favaios, there is nothing better than a brief trip to one of the highest points and observe everything that surrounds this small village.
It could just be the top of one of the mountains that flank the plain, but in this case it is a very well-known viewpoint in this area and where a small chapel was built, which is nothing more or less than the reconstruction of another older chapel and an entire leisure area that is very welcoming, as you can see from the shared records.
There, at the top and looking at the horizon we have the Chapel of Santa Bárbara with a privileged view over the village of Favaios in all its splendor, making it possible to observe practically all the points of interest that are part of practically all tourist guides prepared about it.
Standing out on the horizon as if it were a painting, the Marão mountain range, being the seventh highest elevation in mainland Portugal and marking the transition from the Douro Litoral region to Trás os Montes and Alto Douro, holding some of the most incredible landscapes we can find in this small country.
It is not in vain that many people proudly chant the following phrases:
If someone asked me,
“where did you want to be born”,
Among so much beautiful land,
Favaios was going to be the choosen one.
It doesn't seem to make much sense when translated, but believe me, in Portuguese, it's perfectly understandable :)
Sitting there on one of those benches, surrounded by the coolness of the vines and all the greenery that gave a natural freshness and aroma, surrounded by a singular silence from above, it became noticeable what was not perceptible at ground level, deep down in the center of the village.
From up there, it was possible to frame all the details and contextualize all the stories that are told and all the shared studies that support the reason for those who travel there.
The extensive plateaus define the beauty of the entire region, with a morphology camouflaged by a kind of green blanket.
This soil is abundant in granite formations with a constitution derived from the schist that extends throughout the demarcated Douro region, suitable for vine cultivation and this is visually noticeable.
Looking at this plain, we could hardly believe that in distant times, there was an ocean in this place that ended up disappearing and in its place left a sedimentary deposit and whose geostructural surroundings ended up giving way to the scenario that we can visualize today.
The geomorphological history of this place dates back to the Paleozoic era, around 300 million years ago.
Therefore, it is understandable that the best wines in the world are produced in this area, taking into account the time it took to build the base that gives rise to all this, especially the production of the famous Moscatel de Favaios, produced in unparalleled conditions :P
I think this approach to this perspective of the village seen from above, inserted, surrounded and built in these conditions, made perfect sense.
The history of Favaios is naturally interconnected with the entire surrounding area, with extensive and intricate vineyards forming a mosaic of different shades that reflects the magic of this unique place.
I hope you enjoyed getting to know a little more about this magical territory, everything it has to offer and enjoyed the visual records shared.
That's all for today, don't miss the next articles :)
