To make the world better we need to reclaim what makes us human.

It was with the publication of "On the Origin of Species" in 1859 that the contemporary idea of progress emerged. Perhaps Charles Darwin had no idea how revolutionary his concept of Natural Selection would be for society at the time, but the truth is that only after the publication of his studies and discoveries did the world begin to frenetically appreciate evolution and deem it important for the fate of humanity.

It didn't take long, and after that period, we had the First World War, an event that hundreds of people wished for, perhaps believing that going through that process would make the world much better afterward, after all, what motivates a war other than progress?

Thinking about progress provokes strange feelings in me. On one hand, when we look at technology, we can see how transformative it has been for the world. On the other hand, however, some things have changed for the worse or have not changed at all. A simple and painful example of this is that while I'm here in front of my notebook writing this text, somewhere in the world, someone is sharing heinous materials, materials that have been obtained in the worst possible way. Things I don't need to spell out for you to know what I'm talking about.

Regarding things that haven't changed, even at this very moment, there are people who have nothing to eat at home. Specifically, people in underdeveloped countries inundated with misery after colonization. Because the truth is that progress has two sides, but you need to pay attention to see it because those who fervently desire progress may not understand or may not want to understand that thousands of people will suffer due to certain "advancements."

It is for these reasons, which I have described in a minimized and superficial way compared to the size of the problem, that I do not believe progress is not necessary to make the world better. Humanity needs to reclaim its sense of unity. Its sense of usefulness to others; it needs to rediscover the importance of being useful to the community and helping one another, without material interests that foster a selfish mindset of "personal growth."

If we take a moment to observe indigenous communities worldwide, we realize that the sense of community is very strong and is part of human nature. In fact, maybe we don't even need to go very far. There are communities even within what we call civilization that fulfill this role. Unfortunately, the most natural practice of simply being human has been set aside as technology advances. People have become increasingly robotic and materialistic, and this has harmed human relationships to the point where it is difficult to be optimistic about the future.

I believe that what we do best and what we can continue to do to make the world better is to be altruistic; to spread, through our example, the benefits of helping others as much as possible. Always lend a helping hand to those in need, but also be vigilant so that people do not confuse generosity and empathy with modern-day slavery. As insane as it may seem, there are people who need to learn how to exercise kindness without ulterior motives, how to be good without taking advantage of others. We are in a very dark time, where virtues and values are easily distorted. We need to reclaim what makes us human; to value one another and do good. Only then can the world become better.

Foi com a publicação da Origem das Espécies em 1859 que surgiu a ideia contemporânea de progresso. Talvez Charles Darwin não tivesse ideia do quão revolucionário seria seu conceito de Seleção Natural para a sociedade na época, mas a verdade é que só após a publicação de seus estudos e descobertas que o mundo começou a valorizar freneticamente a evolução e a julgá-la importante para o destino da humanidade.

Não demorou muito tempo, e após esse período tivemos a primeira guerra mundial, evento que centenas de pessoas desejaram que acontecessem, talvez por acreditarem que passando por aquele processo, o mundo seria muito melhor depois, afinal, o que motiva uma guerra além de do progresso?

Pensar no progresso, me provoca sentimentos estranhos. Se por um lado olhamos para a tecnolgia e podemos notar o quão transformadora ela foi pro mundo, por outro lado porém, algumas coisas mudaram para pior ou não mudaram. Um exemplo simples e doloroso sobre isso, é que enquanto estou aqui de frente para o meu notebook escrevendo esse texto, em algum lugar no mundo existe alguém compartilhando materiais hediondos, materiais esses que foram capturados da pior forma possível. Coisas que eu não preciso citar com todas as letras pra vocês saberem do que estou falando.

Sobre coisas que não mudaram, também nesse exato momento existem pessoas que não tem o que comer em casa. Especificamente, pessoas em paises subdesenvolvidos e inundados de miséria pós colonização. Porque a verdade é que o progresso tem dois lados, mas é preciso estar prestando atenção para conserguir enxergar pois aquelas que desejam com todas as forças o progresso talvez não entendam ou não queiram entender que milhares de pessoas sofrerão com ‘determinadas evoluções’’.

É por essas razões acima, das quais descrevi de forma minimizada e superficiais se compararmos com o tamanho do problema, que eu não acredito que o progresso seja necessário para tornar o mundo melhor. A humanidade precisa resgatar seu sentido de unidade. Seu senso de utilidade para com o outro; precisa resgatar a importância de ser útil a comunidade e ajudar uns aos outros, sem interesses materiais que fomentem um pensamento egoista de ‘’evolução pessoal’’.

Se pararmos para observar comunidades indigenas mundo a fora, percebemos que o senso de comunidade é muito forte e que faz parte da natureza humana. Na verdade, talvez nem seja preciso ir muito longe. Existem comunidades mesmo dentro do que chamamos de civilização que cumprem esse papel. Infelizmente a pratica mais natural de ser simplesmente humano tem sido deixada de lado na medida que a tecnologia avança. As pessoas tem se tornado cada vez mais robotizadas e materialistas e isso tem prejudicado as relações humanas de tal forma que é difícil ser otimista quanto ao futuro.

Eu acredito que o que fazemos de melhor, e o que podemos continuar fazendo para construirmos um mundo melhor, é sermos altruistas; espalhar o máximo possível através do exemplo os benefícios de ajudar o próximo. Sempre estender a mão pra quem precisa, porém também é importante estarmos atentos para as pessoas não confundirem generosidade e empatia com escravidão moderna. Por mais insano que pareça, existem pessoas que precisam aprender a como exercer a bondade sem interesses, a como ser bom sem se aproveitar do próximo. Estamos numa época muito obscura, em que virtudes e valores são facilmente deturpadas. Precisamos resgatar aquilo que nos torna humanos; valorizar uns aos outros, e fazer o bem. Só assim o mundo poderá ser melhor.
