Friday Tune #7 - Free your mind and find your way

Some albums just feel like an old friend. You have so many memories together, and their mere presence brings you peace and joy. Their comforting and familiar voice cheers you up and provides you with reliable advice whenever you need it. They've always been there for you, and you know they always will be. Today, I want to talk about one of those albums for me: "Mama's Gun" by Erykah Badu.

Erykah Badu is a renowned American singer-songwriter, record producer, and actress. Born Erica Abi Wright on February 26, 1971, in Dallas, Texas. She showed an early talent for music, learning the piano at the age of seven and freestyle rapping on a local radio station at 14. She attended Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas, where she studied theater and dance, and performed as MC Apples in the hip hop duo the Def Ones. While in school, she changed the spelling of her name to Erykah, with "kah" meaning inner light in Egyptian. Subsequently, as she wanted to shed her "slave name", she changed "Wright" to "Badu", her favorite jazz scat sound, which she later found meant "to manifest light and truth" in Arabic.

She gained popularity in the late 1990s with her debut album "Baduizm", which established her as a leading artist in the neo-soul movement. Erykah's music blends R&B, soul, and hip-hop and is known for its innovative approach to rhythm and lyrics. She is often compared to jazz singer Billie Holiday due to the similarity in their voices. In her early career, she was known for her distinctive and eccentric fashion sense, often wearing large and colorful headwraps. She was also a core member of the Soulquarians.

Erykah Badu's second album, "Mama's Gun", was released on November 21, 2000. In this album, she abandons the goddess posture of her debut and opens up emotionally about regular-person baggage. With an impressive roster of all-stars, including members of D’Angelo’s Soulquarian crew such as jazz trumpeter Roy Hargrove, producer and pianist James Poyser, bassist Pino Palladino, and drummer Questlove, as well as producer Jay Dee. In addition, veteran funkateer Roy Ayers plays vibes, and there's also a duet with Stephen Marley. However, the spotlight remains firmly on Erykah, with her confessional lyrics, luscious voice, and sweeping musical vision.

Compared to "Baduizm", her lyrics are clearer, yet they remain profound, as she sings on "Kiss Me on My Neck": "Bring me water for these flowers growing out my mind". In "A.D. 2000", she takes on the voice of Amadou Diallo, a West African man killed by NYC police, and defiantly states, "No, you won't be namin' no buildings after me". On "...& On", she cleverly asks, "What good do your words do if they can't understand you?" while explaining her change in direction.

This is a soulful and restless record that seamlessly blends various genres, from rocking tunes like "Penitentiary Philosophy" to soulful beats like "Didn't Cha Know" and funk-infused tracks like "Booty". Midway through, the tempo shifts to mellow bluesy ballads and sweet love songs. The album's tour de force is the epic track "Green Eyes", where Erykah Badu captures the complexity of post-breakup emotions. Mama's Gun is a black feminist album that goes beyond documenting heartbreak to address larger issues and challenges that complicate love and relationships. As a blueprint for revolutionary and unapologetically aware music, it is a masterpiece and represents Erykah Badu's zenith as an artist.

Thanks for reading, and have an amazing weekend.
I leave you with "Didn't Cha Know"
