A Connection That Transcends Time | Your Name
We should never judge a book by its cover. That is something that has been heard a lot and although it is usually true, there is something inside us that always pushes us to reject something without knowing anything about it. In the case of anime and in matters of entertainment in general, I am very clear that romance is not my thing, there are very few things of that style that I like, so when the movie Your Name came out, I simply passed it by assuming that it was one of the many cheesy things that bore me. However, I recently read a review of it in the community and was intrigued, that translated into wanting to see it, which happened just last weekend and I must say that although it does have its fair share of romance, the plot kept me in anticipation and entertained me more than I expected.

The story is about two teenagers, Mitsuha and Taki, who mysteriously swap bodies in their sleep. As expected, at first everything is confusing for them, and they make mistakes in each other's lives that they must learn to avoid. The problem is that every time they wake up in their bodies, the memories of each other's lives gradually disappear, as if it had all been just a dream. After many failed attempts, they finally discover an effective way to communicate and help each other in their daily lives.
However, when everything seems to be going well between them, suddenly the changes stop due to a catastrophic event, so they must find a way to reunite and join forces to overcome a great tragedy. Despite not remembering their names, the two will struggle to find a special connection between them that transcends time and space.
Your Name is a movie that definitely surprised me, come on, I knew it was good because it has a very positive review, however, I was expecting a simple teenage romance and not everything that happens in the story. There is a cool set of parallels between the life of a boy from a city as big and as busy as Tokyo, and that of a girl from a small and very traditionalist town. These two opposites are perfectly represented in the film by Mitsuha and Taki, through whom we learn a little more about the culture and the daily life in that country. In the tremendous journey that the characters go through with each change of body, we see them mature, empathize and above all learn to value what they have and respect what others have.
Just when I thought the story had stagnated, and I was about to get lost in a sea of adolescent love, everything changes and something is revealed that completely affects the relationship between the characters. This twist completely changed my perception of the film and saved the plot from being just a teenage love story. Fantasy elements such as time jumps and timelines were included, which enriched the story and set everything up for a chaotic, but entertaining second act, in which we see the protagonists fight against time and memory loss to reach each other.
The emotional denouement is simply what you would expect from such a story, and I must say I was a bit disappointed. I would have liked a good ending for both of them, but not completely happy like the one they presented. But hey, I guess within all the fantasy of the movie, one more fluke, doesn't hurt. Besides, I have to agree that it was a satisfying denouement, despite the cheesiness of the whole thing.
ANIMATION AND MUSIC
Not recognizing the beauty of the visual art in this film would be a tremendous mistake. The character design is very nice, what I liked most about it is that the animators did not fall into the error of creating the typical generically attractive characters that we can see in any romantic Slice of life, which I thought was fantastic. Likewise, the landscapes, both rural and urban, are perfectly realized and beautifully represent both sides of Japan.
As for the music, I had mixed feelings, there were moments when I felt it was wonderful, as if it was the perfect accompaniment for the plot. However, there were some other situations in which the music got in my way, this was because the songs were voiced, which completely took me out of the atmosphere that the story had generated, since in some parts there was a character talking at the same time. It was somewhat unfortunate because it happened at important moments where perhaps another type of musical intervention would have been more appropriate.
Despite the few things I might have disliked about it, it is actually a great movie, with a well-developed plot, as well as its characters, that managed to move me more than once. Perhaps it's not the best Japanese animation I've seen, however, it has a good place in my favorites list, so if you haven't seen it, don't hesitate to do so, it will probably surprise you, as it did me.

This movie is very special for obvious reasons, it has a good plot, it is full of romance, fiction and situations that undoubtedly touch your heart.
The excellent animation is undeniable and its soundtrack is not far behind (although what you say about the songs with voices makes a lot of sense), but for some reason I saw it in two parts because the first time I fell asleep, it was hard for me to get caught and that's probably because I'm a man and these stories cost us a little more 😅.
By the way I still remember with much distaste the sake with chewed rice, I want to get that scene out of my head.
I'm not a man and I also find it hard to watch movies with so much romance, hahaha. That's why this one was saved when they put in the whole different times thing, that fantasy element made me not end up hating it. In fact, my favorite part is when that is discovered and they try to save the town 😅.
Boy, there's so much gross stuff in the folk beliefs of yesteryear, I'm not surprised about that sake 🤣.
One of the things I like about dropping by the community is that they share reviews on anime I haven't seen before that look good and I think that's the case here. Thanks for the recommendation.
Regards.
I hope you can watch it soon and enjoy it.
Cheers ✌️
This is one of the best anime movies I watched so far in romcom genre. The story, visuals etc are incredible. Haven't seen an all rounder like this one in a while now. A silent voice comes close in terms of story but the visuals is unbeatable in Your name.
Yes, it is a very good movie, although it is not in my list of favorites, I recognize that it is well made.
Cheers ✌️
Interesting! Which the best anime movie you watched then?
Perfect Blue, I also love Nausicaa.
I checked, these are vintage anime. That usually means it has good story hehe.
Thanks :)
Perfect Blue is one of the best movies I have ever seen, and that is not only talking about anime.
Good to know. I added it to my watch list.
Yes that's true I agree "We should never judge a book by its cover" If you we're just going to base on the cover it's boring but if you look deeper into it you find a something important like that thing.
I've already watched it many times and we have the same thought its nice but it's lack of something but overall its a nice movie. I even cry when watching this movie. The visual seems good it looks realistic.
What happened to me with this movie is that, although I liked it, the impact it had on me was very short-lived. It has a good story and development, but it doesn't really delve into anything, it stays on the surface. And so too with the animation, it's good, but it's not brilliant. As you say, it lacked something.
This movie holds a very special place in my heart! It is one of my favs anime movie, whenever I rewatched it, the unexplained feeling I feel years ago when I first watch the movie came back, like it is still the first time watching it. Oh my god! I want to rewatch it now!
It's a very nice movie, although I don't know if I would consider it one of my favorites.
Don't let anything stop you, watch it again, hahahaha.
I will look for the one you mention, thank you very much for your comment.
I haven’t seen this before but it just went on my list. Thank you for the excellent review on this piece.
I hope you can watch it soon. Cheers ✌️
It was also recommended to me but I had not dared to see it because I considered it just another one of the bunch, but as you say, it has some themes already seen in other movies, the temporal parallelism and the denouement (what is really happening and the tragedy) made me change my mind.
It's a very good movie, with nice animation, excellent soundtrack, I got tangled at the beginning haha but it has a very well done plot ❤️
The beginning is confusing, but after that, the movie develops a good pace and ends up being somewhat entertaining.
Cheers ✌️
Hello friend, I saw it a few years ago, I had forgotten certain things, it is one of the Japanese animated films that I liked the most; greetings.
It is a bit old but still good, maybe not the best for me, but I consider it entertaining. Cheers ✌️
This movie is so gorgeous. From the storytelling to the animation, it's such a great film that I think everyone should watch at least once.
Thanks for sharing this on the community!
I like it, but I don't think it's that great 🙈. The plot surprised me, but it ended up being really simple. Still, I consider it a good movie.
Oh well we all have our personal taste, that's okay 😅💕. But you're right tho, the plot is really simple
I liked it, although I'm not sure if I would watch it again. What captivated me was the impact of discovering they were in different times. Without that surprise factor, I feel the plot loses a lot. Still, I enjoyed it quite a bit.
Greetings ✌️
This movie, according to your review, is very interesting. Though I'm not used to watching anime dramas, according to your review, this will be a fun movie to watch.
Well, I'll have to add that to my list. ✍️. My list is getting long 😅.
As for the music, I've not really paid attention to any music in anime movies apart from some like Bleach, AOT, One Piece, and Demon Slayer, but for the sake of reviews, I think I'll start listening to them.
Your post is also insightful, and I'm able to learn one or two things from it.
The visuals aesthetic and music of this movie are gorgeous in my opinion. I like how the story has funny moments very well mixed with more serious and dramatic themes.
It is a very good movie, I enjoyed it very much.
Thank you very much for stopping by and commenting ✌️
You're Welcome 😄
AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH FINALLY YOU WATCH IT!!! hahahaha, we definitely shouldn't judge a book by its cover and even less if it's Your Name.
Thanks for sharing ❤️
Hahahahahaha, yeah, I finally saw it. Although it's not my style, I ended up enjoying it. Thank you very much for the recommendation 😁
