Life After Retirement
Immediately I saw this topic, and I just remembered one of my lecturers who was teaching us but not lecturing us accounting. It's a topic to reckon with, as the government is deeply involved in this regard. The welfare of the pensioners is significant and must be considered.
Retirement is something the government was supposed to look into. Staying for a long period of years serving the government is not a joking issue, most especially to the government and the worker involved.
In Nigeria, there is a particular year you must work before retiring, and this alone is enough. I have seen so many workers who have been retired and at home doing one thing or the other. Some have gotten involved in a business fetching them money. Most old people would rather not sit at home even after retirement. They want to leave the house just for their bodies to look balanced. One of my lecturers while in school was a retired lecturer. The school was lacking an accounting lecturer and then had to invite the man to lecture the accounting department. He was the best out of the lecturers I have seen so far regarding accounting. He was teaching us but not lecturing. In a real fact, teaching is different from what we called lecturing.
After some time, I had to ask myself, “The pensioners, are they well paid by the government?” The question came to my mind after seeing the age of this man. He was of she and yet still agile to carry out a special duty.
The pensioners are just at home without receiving their salaries. Some have been trying to be going to the pensioner's office without coming into the real sense of answering them. They have tried until they met their death, but then the government did not answer them. Pensioners are trying as they found it difficult to collect their gratuities except those in government houses. The ones there can use their influence to come up with a technical issue.
Many people have been waiting patiently for their gratuity, while some managed to get theirs. Some would grow to the age of not enjoying their seat before they die. Some would die, leaving the gratuity behind. After their death, no one would have access to the money any more. This means most of them are reaped of what their sweat.
In the United States or so, a place is built specially for the pensioners. They stayed there and are cared for. Everything they needed is provided. That's how it's supposed to be in Nigeria, where I reside. The pensioners were supposed to be cared for and provided for. There is supposed to be a place created or built for the pensioners.
Why on earth would the pensioners be deprived of their rights after serving their country for years?
My former class teacher while I was still in the school received his gratuity at an early stage, while some others who got retired the same period suffered before seeing their gratuities. Treating them the way they were supposed to be treated does not and can never be the best.
I wonder why the government still delay their rights even after years of labour.
It's a very sad thing that even after serving the Government, the token of pension is still being withheld, the government needs to do better
