This Economy Is Not “Economying”
Right now in Ghana, when you wake up in the morning you have to hold your breath for about 2 minutes if not, by the time you realize, the government will be taxing your breathing. It’s not even a joke anymore. I schooled in the Northern part of Ghana even though I was born and raised in the south. Those times in school, it was just happy moments because food was so cheap. Even at that time, my friends in the southern schools used to complain and I would laugh at them that life is not hard, they are the ones that want to live Accra life(expensive lifestyle).
What about now? Now the food prices in the north are almost the same as the south. When I was in school I used to come home every vacation even if it was just a week because the transportation was cheap but now, the transportation from Takoradi to Navrongo is not a joke and I’m not talking about flight, just bus. Now, everything is just going left in the country. Let me give you a breakdown of the expenses of an average Ghanaian.
I was going to start saying let’s buy porridge with 5 cedis but I just remembered something. The other day I was buying porridge and the woman told me there’s no 1 cedi koose( bean cake) so I asked for 2 cedis and she said no, it starts from 5 cedis. I shouted “common koose”? In fact everyone around me was laughing. Ei! Koose that we used to buy one for 50 pesewas? I’m not even going to do the breakdown again, let’s focus on just the breakfast. So now, breakfast is almost like 10cedis and that’s if you want cheap food.
Do you know how much the minimum wage in Ghana is? 18.15 cedis. Did you say I’m kidding? Naa, I kid you not. 18.15cedis which is 1.21dollars. Someone’s father will go and suffer in the sun only to receive this amount at the end of the day. So you subtract the breakfast from the money. How much is left now? 8.15cedis. Oh Ghana! I haven’t even come to lunch, supper, bills, transportation, even savings. Let me remove savings because there’s nothing to be saved from this amount. The only thing the person can save is definitely his/her soul.
It’s really sad in this country. Very sad. Now people don’t even go to the gym to lose weight. Already, there’s no money and food so you end up doing intermittent fasting without even realizing. See, a lot of people in this country haven’t eaten for about three days. Oh mine is even 2 weeks. The economy is just doing anyhow. People don’t even call on the government again because it feels like they don’t care about us.
One thing I’m happy about is the amount of charity foundations people have opened to support ourselves as Ghanaians. I get so happy when I see donations going on with people feeding the poor and all. It just gives me some kind of hope and I know that at this point, if better days don’t come to us, they’ll hear our knocks on their doors soon.
All images are mine
In this economy, if you add gym you will end up dying🤣 But this is really serious hm.
🤣🤣for real
Wow I use to think our minimum wage here in Nigeria is low until I saw your guys own in Ghana.
Omo we all need to do something about this government who are paying themselves heavily and yet they're paying workers such a ridiculous fee, I mean how can you work to earn such a low wage, it's disgusting.
Oh it’s very low
At this point I don’t know what we can do for them to even mind us.
Will get back to this.
Please don’t come with heat😂
😂🤣😂🤣 I cooled off before coming no fear 😂
Ghana is complaining about economy 😂😂😂
Nigerian user just laughing 😂😂😂😂🤣🤣
You'll see my post tomorrow...
Just wait🤣😂😂
You think you know economic suffer?
Ah it’s only in Africa that people want to show that their suffering is more than someone’s suffering… Seki what is this🤣🤣🤣🤣
Just chill...
I'm doing the post...
Latest tomorrow, it'll be up for y'all to see..😂😂😂
😂😂😂
That part you said someone's father will go and suffer under the sun only to earn a little above a dollar.... Sounded so much like me saying that 😂🤣😂🤣
But... But........ You people have electricity but then dey like Una case worse pass Nigeria own cause our minimum wage is Thirty thousand Naira which is like 20 dollar 😂
I really wanted to know the economic situation of Ghana, and finally I got it. Remaining Togo and Benin Republic... I want to form a theory 😅.
Bean cake over here is fifty Naira for one which is cheap. Pap however is tied as from two hundred but one question, before I finally say what's in my mind, that you people's minimum wage is it monthly or per hour?
This is daily
wait did you just say your minimum wage is 1.2$ (18.5 cedis), wow I never cedis coming at all, ours is even better a bit 🤣🤣, but the taxing is general, they are even tasking us for been alive here and it is choking
You never cedis coming? Nice🤣
Lol but your government dont have humam conscience at all
The issue of Inflation and economic crisis is everywhere,
Just yesterday, me and some of my pals in the Neoxian city was discussing this,
It's no longer funny, price of things here skyrocketed and our government too are doing their best to frustrate and make living unbearable for common man.
Imagine a sane president removing Fuel Subsidy in his first month in the office, no plans no strategies whatever is put in place to ease the citizens pain and suffering.
May God bless us enough to keep surviving and blessing others too
I don’t know but this is funny 🤣
I can't even laugh.
I guess this whole thing is an African thing. Because here in Nigeria, we're facing a lot.😂😂 The transportation, there's no light, we use our money to charge phones. Now, if you see garri to drink, be very happy sef.
The whole thing ehn. God will help us.
Hmm it’s sad
Even when you buy airtime with MoMo, you pay 1% tax. Such nonsense.
Those days in school, you take 100gh to town and come back with the whole market. Now, 100gh is equivalent to 10gh. Let’s just be holding our breath and going.😂
Fr o, ey me I used to go with 50gh o
Good for you.😅
In this current economy, there is nothing like common koose again, in fact, nothing is common these days.
Your minimum wage, 18.15 cedis, is that per month?🙄
#dreemerforlife
No, day
Oh okay, even at that so miserable.
Wow! This inflation has affected most countries. One needs to increase income streams to be more comfortable in this situation. We hope it gets better.
#dreemerforlife
Increasing income almost gets you nowhere
Hmmm... I doubt. Are you saying if someone earned $2,000 monthly and later finds a business model that brings in $10,000 monthly, it won't be of great help or life won't be better?
You know eh, the thing with Ghanaian economy is that all that you’re saying is not realistic to the average Ghanaian. The government would never not in 10 years to come increase the average income to $2000 eh? Ghana?
Any increase that happens in Ghana gets us nowhere because they increase the income and then increase prices and after two weeks they even hold back peoples salaries
It’s just a roller coaster if we want to be realistic
But if this were to be a fancy American movie? Then yes, it can happen….$2000 monthly is great and then I become a business tycoon…..I just hope you get my point
Wow! Does it mean the government tracks everyone's sources of income? What if you run an automated e-commerce store with digital products? Does the government have to know?
If so, I would say the restrictions are high and living in Ghana is excessively controlled.
Lol. Funny you.
So recently the taxes have been soul wrecking
There was this trending picture that an online business owner was lamenting on the charges on transactions
With That particular amount that was being deducted, I’m not sure the business would survive if it keeps on being deducted all the time
The government always finds a way
Wow! This is sad. They have their way on citizens. Well, we hope things change for good.
Yeah we hope
You wrote about Ghana, but your post mirrors what is going on in so many developing countries. Pardon me, I wanted to say that it mirrors what is happening in my country, but no, our situation seems to be worse.
Yet we keep praying and believing for better days.
#dreemerforlife
It’s just sad
This is so terrible, Abena 😭 The disparity across the world is heartbreaking. How do people cope? Do more people live together in communes to save costs and split overheads? Do a high percentage of the population live on minimum wage or is the average wage higher? Is unemployment and crime high where you live? It is no wonder that more and more people in developing countries are turning to blockchain for survival.
#dreemerforlife
Honestly, a high percentage of people here “survive” that’s what they call it. Most times they don’t even get paid for the jobs they do especially those in the government sector.
Yes, most people live together to cut cost because they contribute to cook and rent and all
Unemployment? Oh very high, but crime? Not so much here but very high in Accra.
It never gets better here that’s why everyone is just trying to relocate to different countries to find jobs.
Thank you dreemer
We're hoping for a change. These times are really hard.
#dreemerforlife
Yeah
Ohhh dear this is so bad, we can only hope for the best❤️
Always a #dreemerforlife
Yeah
I'm now like why left please? 😅
If given an option i would come to ghana o. At least you guys know the direction your problem is facing unlike nigerians that our government is carrying us to where we don't know🤣
#dreemerforlife
🤣🤣🤣🤣
