Crocheting A Corset Top | Stepping Out Of My Comfort Zone As A Crocheter

Hello everyone, I’m here to share with you all this corset top I made for myself. About some weeks ago, I got invited to hangout and the theme was wear you so I made a top that described my personality. I got invited again and this time, the theme was “out of comfort zone”. The moment I saw that theme, I knew I had to make a corset top.

I’ve never owned a corset top and all my 14 years of crocheting, I’ve never made one. I’ve just been so scared to do it thinking it might not come out nice or as I want. I’ve been postponing the making of a corset top since 2020 and finally I decided to just go out of my comfort zone and make this top. Thankfully, @doreenarch inspired me with some of her works. I wanted a simple yet artistic top so I designed the top myself.

The difficult part of the top was joining the bra cups together. I have made over 100+ bralettes but this particular one was different. I had to undo my work more than 7 times. I spent about 2 weeks on this top because for the first time in my crochet life, I was scared to make mistakes and oh, I made plenty of them.
I used about 5 balls of yarns and a 1.60mm crochet hook.

I started with the bra cups. I made the bottom part of the cup with 4 single crochets and then increased to the middle part and then reduced back to 4 single crochet. I made sure that base was my size.

I moved on to the upper part of the cup. I made single crochet on top of the base of the cup till I had a full cup. I repeated the same for the other bra cup.

I moved to the complicated part which was joining the cups together. I had to redo it 7 times as I said before getting the right thing. I started with a slip stitch and then moved from one end to another, slip stitching into the bra cups with single crochet in between.

I finally made the sides of the top which I call the wings and the main body of the top. Ideally, I should have used single crochet but according the design and pattern I made for myself, I used half double crochet for the body of the top. I crocheted from side to side and the slip stitched to the other sides of the bra cup. The length of the top was 8 inches when I was done.

I then made the lace holes at the back of the top by skipping 2 stitches and making 5 single crochets to make 7 holes at each side. I chained enough length to serve as the lace.

To make the ruffle design, I measured from one bralette to the back of the top and chain that measurement. Mine was about 19 inches, yours could be more or less depending on your size. I then made 3 double crochet in each stitch and then another row of double crochet. And I was done with the top.

When I finished the top, I realized it wasn’t even difficult. It was just my mind playing games on me because I had already decided a corset top was too difficult to crochet. My mom really liked the top and said “that is a very beautiful Gen Z top” and I agreed. This was very insightful and fun to make. I’ve learned so much from making this top and I already have a table full of orders now. Thank you for your time.

See my beautiful Abe😍 I can imagine the so much work and dedication that went into creating this beautiful corset, even sewing a corset is not an easy task talk more of crochet, receive your cape sis, because you are very talented, no cap, the color green suits your skin tone so perfectly.

Is it what I'm thinking though, green=Nigeria color 😁

I can totally relate with the stitching are undoing stitching part, even with sewing too you have to keep practice before mastering the art of making corsets.
This is too beautiful for a first attempt. The mistakes were worth it and thanks for sharing.
